Most everybody enjoys autos. Bargains are also in people’s minds. Kicking the tires and talking down the price, people really love getting the best price on a car. Where do the auctions find the cars? Often the police impound cars that belong to criminals or that were used in committing a crime. For example its the law that drug dealers’ possessions are confiscated and sold. When these cars are taken it isn’t long before it’s time to sell them for a little cash. Tickets also generate a lot of these cars. If the owner doesn’t pay to reclaim the car, it’s offered for sale.
Sometimes the cars are sold straight to dealerships who either sell them on the lot or auction them. They might also be purchased and then re-auctioned for a higher amount. This isn’t important. At some point the car is up for sale to the highest bidder and can become a whale of a deal for a savvy person. But beware of some pitfalls of purchasing cars via auction. As the saying goes it’s “buyer beware.”
There’s usually no warranty offered with these autos. All sales are final and it’s up to you to do the homework”. That is, in the auto industry, “as is.” It’s not illegal to utilize puffery. That’s making non specific positive claims about the car such as “it’s a great deal” or “you’d be foolish not to want to drive home in this beauty.” They might even make claims like “it might as well be new.” The law allows quite a bit of latitude on this phrases that imply quality. But they’re pretty meaningless.
Have some information when you visit an auction. Take a good look at the cars. Bring a mechanic with you if possible. Take advantage of the test drives most auctions offer. When it’s impounded cars for sale it can be a great deal. But remember that if it seems too good to be true it usually is.
